The reason - too many fraudulent transactions with copies of passports
The Head of the State Service for Regulatory Policy and Entrepreneurship Development Michael Brodsky asked the NBU to cancel copying passports for foreign exchange transactions, as Kommersant-Ukraine writes.
The reason for this request was information in media that scammers are increasingly buying copies of passports from citizens for fraudulent actions, usually for credit or registration of companies.
According to M. Brodskiy, passport copy does not work as a tool to curb currency speculation.
The problem is that cashiers must stamp the copy of passport, making their use for other operations impossible, but probably not all employees perform this provision, while the question of its abolition has long been overdue.
As an alternative, institutions suggest to copy only passports of persons who are not customers of bank where they exchange currency.
