Today, the Verkhovna Rada endorsed the draft law №6470, which fixes the line in the foreign policy of Ukraine, where the accession into NATO is set as the top priority.
276 people’s deputies voted for the respective decision at Tuesday meeting, Ukrainian News reports.
According to the explanatory note, the new law introduces amendments to the Law of Ukraine On Basics of Domestic and Foreign Policy and On Basics of National Security of Ukraine, required for the accession into the Alliance.
According to draftsmen, the adoption of this law will contribute to expansion and deepening of cooperation of Ukraine with NATO, strengthening national security of the country as well as will guarantee its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the annexation of the part of the Ukrainian territory set a pressing challenge for Ukraine on ensuring the national security of the country”, they explained the necessity of such step of Ukraine.
It is emphasized that the necessity of the country’s accession to NATO is evidenced by the experience of certain neighboring countries, for which such unity became “the most effective tool for ensuring security, preserving territorial integrity and sovereignty”.
