Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak presented the first draft strategy of low carbon development of Ukraine until 2050.

It was presented during the third conference “The Low Carbon Development of Ukraine”, as reported on the governmental portal, UKRINFORM reports.

“This document includes a long-term vision of transition of the country’s economy to low carbon development. It envisages the reduction of emission and increase of absorption of greenhouse gases, implementation of ecologically safe production with the use of green technologies in all economy sectors. We have ahead a difficult way to integration of strategy principles to national, regional and local strategies and development systems”, the minister noted.

Semerak thanked partners of the Ministry of the Natural Resources, USAID project and the subject committee of the Verkhovna Rada for supporting the initiatives of the ministry in this process.

“I encourage experts to get involved in professional and public discussion of the strategy. I am confident that the effective, deep discussion will enable to obtain qualitative strategic document as a result”, the minister noted.

He added that by ratifying the Paris Climate Agreement, Ukraine, in the short term, changed the vectors of its climate policy and is now moving further at a rapid pace.

“The submission for public discussion of the draft strategy is the evidence of success of this process. We realize the importance of transition to low carbon development as well as the responsibility for fulfilment of their obligations under international climate agreements”, Semerak noted.

The minister is confident that Ukraine should gradually refuse from fossil fuel and start investing in renewable energy sources. In his opinion, it is not only a progressive plan of global community, but also a successful formula of quick economic growth.
