Naftogaz Comments on Merkel’s Statements about Nord Stream-2

Wednesday, 11 April 2018 16:26

Naftogaz called as a good news the fact that for the first time Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel publicly admitted to the presence of the political component in Nord Stream-2 project and emphasized the necessity of preserving transit through Ukraine’s territory, according to Naftogaz’s statement, EP reports.

“We hope that the new position of Germany will help ministers of other EU countries to decide on suggested amendments to the Gas Directive, already approved by the European Commission and Parliament”, the company notes.

The statement notes that even its traditional supporters stopped calling Nord Stream-2 as a purely commercial affair.

“It is rapidly losing the lamb curls, from under which its true essence is revealed: geopolitical weapon of the Kremlin, targeted against Europe”, according to the statement.

On March 27, it became known that Germany gave permission for construction of the debatable gas pipeline Nord Stream-2 under the Baltic Sea.

On April 5, Finland gave its permission for construction of the gas pipeline in the exclusive economic zone.

On April 5, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine encouraged foreign parliaments, governments and global business community not to participate in the preparation, financing or lobbying the construction of Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

On April 6, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Energy within the European Commission Dominique Ristori stated that the construction project of Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline does not contribute to diversification of gas supplies to Europe and will not be supported by the European Commission.

On April 10, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel stated that Nord Stream-2 project cannot be implemented without preserving Ukraine as the transit country.

Nord Stream-2 project does not provide for construction and operation of two gas pipeline strings with total capacity of 55 bln cubic meters of gas per year from Russia’s coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany.

The opponents of the project, including Poland, Baltic states and Denmark, state that Nord Stream-2 will increase EU dependence on Gazprom, which already supplies about a third of gas volumes to EU.

Poroshenko considers as the “important symbol” the mentioning of this initiative in the coalition agreement between the conservative block CDU/CSU and the Social-Democratic Party of Germany (SDPG).
