U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm confirmed the messages, which appeared in the media about future employees.
“Qualcomm makes layoffs of full-time and part-time employees”, the company’s representative, who refused to clarify the number of downsized jobs. The layoffs are part of cost reduction measures by $1 bln, first announced in January, finance.ua reports.
According to Qualcomm’s representative, the option of cost reduction without cutting down the staff was initially considered; however, as the result, they came to conclusion that the staff reduction is necessary for supporting the sustainable growth and financial success.
Quoting the sources, familiar with this question, Bloomberg reported that Qualcomm prepares to downsize about 1,500 jobs in California.
Though the exact number and time of downsizing are still unknown, the company should reveal this information, when it will send the respective Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) to California state authorities. According to U.S. legislation, the companies should notify authorities 30 days prior in case if 50 or more jobs are downsized.
The company’s representative told Reuters that the employees, impacted by layoffs, will be offered severance packages.
Qualcomm is fighting to stay alive amidst a flurry of recent developments in the last year, which will be remembered for the attempt of the rival chipmaker Broadcom to initiate a hostile takeover, multiple government investigations due to accusations in dubious business practices and lengthy legal war with Apple.
