The Verkhovna Rada Committee demands from NYT to contradict facts, stated in the article about corruption in Ukraine.
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense will send to The New York Times explanations to the article “Invincible Corruption in Ukraine”, published by them, and will demand contradiction of certain theses of editorial materials, people’s deputy Ivan Vinnyk (Block of Petro Poroshenko) said in the interview to 5 Channel on Wednesday evening.
“This is a reputable edition. And someone gave them information, which is not consistent with the reality. This will be confirmed not only by the Ukrainian General Prosecutor’s Office, which has some level of mistrust, but also British specialists, which I hope, are considered by The New York Times as competent. We will demand contradiction of the article”, - he said.
The people’s deputy explained that contradiction will be required in that part, where it is told about the responsibility of Ex-Prosecutor Victor Shokin in the context of the case of Ex-Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Nikolai Zlochevskii, hints on the responsibility of President of Petro Poroshenko, and “consequently, will require to comment a direct requirement to renew Sakvarelidze (David Sakvarelidze, Former Deputy General Prosecutor) – within which legal framework, how editors of the reputable edition can demand from the Head of State to do this.”
Vynnyk reminded that this article was based on the fact that Shokin showed negligence in the case of provision of materials in reply to the international legal request on Zlochevskii’s case – allegedly the case was closed in Ukraine and this became the basis for lifting seizure from $23 mln, which Zlochevskii transferred to Cyprian company.
“We studied the question and determined that, firstly, the case in Ukraine has not been closed and continues to be investigated, including United Kingdom. And the seizure has been lifted from 23 mln, as the international legal request was sent to the General Prosecutor’s Office by British specialists, this direction was headed by Kas’ko and he responded within one day after the date of court proceeding. In the meantime, it was not even a response, but the draft of response, without his signature”, - he said.
The deputy informed that in many countries the journalist’s code requires unbiasedness and comprehensive coverage of the situation. “I absolutely hope that the New York Times will respond in a proper way in this case, when it will obtain well-reasoned information from our side”.
Poroshenko sharply responded NYT for the article about corruption.
It should be reminded that during the visit of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in the USA, the New York Times sharply criticized his domestic policy in its leading article, in particular, the journalists accused Ukrainian authorities of inability to overcome one of the major problems – corruption.
