Secretary of the Venice Commission praised Ukraine's efforts
In an on-air television interview the Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert admitted that Ukraine is making progress in optimizing its judicial power, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
According to T. Markert, reforming the judicial system in Ukraine is a key pre-condition for signing the Association Agreement with the EU, which may take place at the Vilnius summit of «Eastern Partnership» this November. In particular, Markert praised the possibility of amending the Constitution of Ukraine to exclude the Verkhovna Rada from the process of appointment of judges. These changes were developed by the Constitutional Assembly.
«The positive thing is that the probationary period for judges is canceled and they will not need to obtain approval from the VR after five years in office», said the Commission Secretary.
Markert also believes the composition of the Supreme Council of Justice will improve as well - it is going to include judges elected by other judges.
«Ukraine took due notice of previous suggestions by the Venice Commission on improving the electoral and judicial system», Markert summed up.
