Some US congressmen consider that Barak Obama should “think over” new sanctions against Russia due to hacker attacks, behind which, according to them, Moscow is, RIA News reports, quoting The Washington Post materials.  

In particular, Adam Schiff, the member of the Committee on Intelligence of US House of Representatives, encouraged Obama to “publicly condemn” Russia for hacker attacks. He also suggested imposing sanctions.

“There is a directive, which allows the President to impose sanctions in response to cyberattacks”, the congressman said, adding that Russia will “continue” attacking servers, connected with electoral campaign of US presidential candidates, Obama should consider some response measures, in which economic sanctions could be the first step.

Chairman of Special Committee of the House of Representatives Dianne Feinstein supported Schiff. On Thursday, she said that she is working with him on the statement on “activity of Russian hackers” and how US government should respond to them. Feinstein emphasized that President should respond to hacker attacks “not only with words”.

Her colleague from the Senate’s Intelligence Committee Richard Berr agrees with her, stating that hacker attacks require “some response”. “I don’t think that words helped. I think that it is time for administration to do something”– he said.

The Washing Post notes that “the opening of a new front against Russia” can jeopardize the diplomatic progress in relationships between Moscow and Washington. “But the legislators say that this does not matter, considering that Russia allegedly attempts to interfere with US election process”, the edition reports.

Within recent several months, the hackers carried out attacks on the USA. In particular, in summer mass media reported about the attack on the computer network of the National Committee of the Democratic Party.

Hilary Clinton and her advocates state that Russia is responsible for it, however there were no evidence, confirming this fact. Some US mass media, including The Washington Post, announced that Moscow allegedly wants to influence the results of US elections.

Vladimir Putin’s Press-secretary Dmitrii Peskov said that the accusations of Russia’s involvement in hacker attacks are “absurd, verging on sheer stupidity”.
