European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager is not going to refuse from claiming Apple to pay more than $14 bln to Ireland and intends to continue studying activities of US companies – RNS reports.
“It is 100% legal to impose tax on the profits there, where they are generated, - Vestager said to Handelsblatt – it is frustrating that US companies pay less taxes than European”.
Responding to the suggestion of one of the users in Twitter on checking “185 general directors from USA, considering that it is legal to pay 0.05% taxes in Europe”, she said: “I will do so”.
On September 16, Business Roundtable (business association, including general directors of US companies with annual revenues of $7 trln) forwarded a letter to leaders of 28 EU states, calling the Apple’s decision unacceptable. In this case, according to the letter, Business Roundtable’s interest is “the respect of supremacy of law”.
“If this decision is not cancelled, this will create a precedent that EU members cannot control their tax system”, Head of Business Roundtable John Engler stated in the letter.
