U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions against Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Valiollah Seif, the agency reported.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused Seif of providing financial assistance to Hezbollah, which U.S. recognized as a terrorist organization, RBC reports.
“The high-ranking bank official of Iran contributed to… financing terrorist groups, such as Hezbollah… U.S. will stop more and more shameless Iran’s abuse of the international financial system”, Bloomberg quotes Mnuchin.
On May 8, U.S. President Donald Trump told about withdrawal from a nuclear deal with Iran and announced new sanctions against Iranian regime. Washington is not satisfied either with Teheran’s support of such organizations as Hezbolla.
The historic agreement on Iranian nuclear program dated 2015 provides for lifting some part of sanctions from Iran in return for limiting its capacities on enrichment and storing nuclear materials. Trump called the agreement unfair and doubted whether it will limit nuclear ambitions of Teheran.
The leading EU countries and Russia opposed U.S. withdrawal from the agreement.
It should be added that Trump intends to instantaneously impose sanctions against foreign companies, which will run business with Iran.
The period from 3 to 6 months for terminating business will be provided for the firms, which are already working in Iran; otherwise, the access to U.S. market will be closed for them.
