U.S. Defense Secretary arrived together with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under escort of attack helicopters.
U.S. Minister of Defense James Mattis made a surprise visit to Afghan capital Kabul, the Associated Press reported on Friday, September 7.
Chief of Pentagon arrived together with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford under escort of attack helicopters.
Mattis intends to have meeting with President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani as well as the commanders of U.S./NATO troops and military forces.
Mattis arrived to Afghanistan after the recent visit to Pakistan of U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, who claimed that U.S. wants to “reload” flimsy relations with Islamabad. The newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan expressed optimism in this regard, promising to work with Washington “for the sake of peace”. Meanwhile, he repeatedly stated that Pakistan is not interested anymore in partnership with U.S. in terms of the war.
