The international community hopes that the President would veto the law
The NGO Freedom House, which explores the democratic changes in the world, published a report on the political situation in Ukraine
Freedom House strongly criticized the recent actions of the Ukrainian parliament. Thus, the legislative body has introduced criminal liability for libel, restrictions for groups who receive funding from abroad, and the punishment for participating in protests. Freedom House calls on the Council speaker, Volodymyr Rybak, and the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, to undo the legislation that is contrary to the obligation of the country to ensure universal human rights.
January 16, violating the legal standards and procedures, the parliament approved legislation designed to limit dissent, to reduce opposition protests in the country and to regulate free speech. The law will also allow authorities to fine organizers of unauthorized public gatherings and restrict them to use special equipment, such as tents. The law also expands the definition of extremism by banning distribution in print or online publications of materials that threaten the constitutional order.
David Kramer, president of Freedom House, said that he was unpleased to observe the democratically - elected government of Ukraine increasingly ignoring democratic expectations of the Ukrainian people.
