Facebook management presented the strategy of fighting multiple fake news, which already led to political scandals on US elections, BBC reports.

As Vice-President for News John Hodgman notes, the social media understand the necessity of fighting the distribution of false information; however, in the meantime, Facebook intends to retain its role as an open platform for information exchange.

For a start, the company facilitates users to report on appearance of fake news. If the certain number of users report on it, then the news will be submitted for revision to information agencies and other third-party companies, which do the fact checking.

The news, which were not corroborated with facts, will not disappear from social media; however, they will be marked as “controversial” and will appear lower in news feeds of users. This news can be shared; however, in such case the user will obtain the warning that the news is “controversial”.

In addition, Facebook introduces algorithm, which will not allow spammers to operate in social media under the names of real news organizations.

Last time, many people criticized Facebook for inability to resist inflow of fake news. Hilary Clinton and Pope Francis became the victims of fake news stories.

In mid-November, the company’s founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his page: “Our purpose is that people have access to stories, which they are interested in. And, we know that people want to obtain precise information. We do not want to act as arbiters of truth; that is why, instead of it, we trust reliable third parties and the society around us”.
