The judge in the US refused to bail Volkswagen’s Top Manager Oliver Schmidt, who, for the totality of charges pressed, faces up to 169 years of imprisonment.
The judge refused to bail Schmidt, stating that Schmidt, as the German citizen, could return to Germany, with which the US has no extradition treaty.
Earlier, US authorities arrested Volkswagen’s Engineer James Liang, who worked for the company for two decades. He pleaded guilty and now faces up to five years in prison.
It should be reminded that on 9 January, the FBI arrested Schmidt, who was the Head of Compliance Department in US company.
Recently it became known that Volkswagen will pay US government USD 4.3 billion because of the diesel scandal.
