The World Bank published a report on the global financial development

The World Bank report provides data on the spreading of the financial services

The level of interest of people in financial services is very different depending on the region. Worldwide, only 50 % of the adult population have bank accounts. The rest do not use banking services and have accounts in formal financial institutions. Not all of 2.5 billion people that do not use banking services are really interested in them. However, costs, long distance, inability to move and interfere with complex documentation prevent using the bank service, even in case of need.

Thus, 20 % of people who do not use financial services noted that the main reason for their lack of interest in banking services is living far from cities. 35 % of small businesses in developing countries noted that limited access to financial services is a major cause of disruption in their work. About 25 % of large enterprises are facing this problem.

The development of the financial sector matters for poverty reduction. Low-income families could receive significant benefits from savings in bank accounts, insurance services and basic benefits. For companies, especially small and young, access to finance means innovation, job creation and economic growth.

However, the involvement of the financial system should not be extended to all working-age population, as some individuals and firms do not need financial services. Efforts to subsidize these services can lead to debt and financial instability.

The focus of public policy should be the solution to the problems of the market by creating regulation and legal framework (eg protection of creditors' rights to regulate the business, and control mechanisms of legal protection for consumer safety), and support information environment (eg, the introduction of standards for storage and spreading the information, transparent lending, etc.).

There are several ways to increase the popularity of banking services. Firstly, it is the distribution of basic economic knowledge among the population. People who use the banks services need to understand the mechanism of these financial institutions. Secondly, we should introduce innovative technologies to facilitate access to financial services. Thus, mobile payments, mobile banking as well as identification of the borrower using biometrics (fingerprint, iris, etc.) make financial transactions much easier and more affordable.
