A report on economic inequality

Monday, 20 January 2014 16:03

Wealth of 1% of world's population are higher than the earning of 3.5 billion people

British Society for the Protection of poor, Oxfam, published a study on the risks of the gap between the very rich people and those who live in poverty, as reported by the Herald Scotland.

The report «Working for the Few», published on Monday, said that the cumulative assets of 85 richest people in the world was $ 1trln, the same amount as the half the world's population.

The document focuses on the degree of global economic inequalities caused by the rapid growth of wealth. This jeopardizes the development of human society. Last year 210 people were at billionaires’ status, expanding the existing list of most wealthy by 1426 with a capital of $ 5.4 trillion. The report says that instead of moving forward and growing, people are divided by economic and political power, in terms of social unrest and disintegration.

In addition, according to Oxfam, the number of rich people is 1% of the total population. However, their fortune is estimated at $ 110 trillion, which is 65 times bigger than the total amount of accumulated assets of the half the world's population. This is a major threat to the openness of the political and economic systems.

The number of rich is increasing steadily. For example, in India the number of billionaires has increased from six to 61 people over the past 10 years. The amount of savings is $ 250 billion.

Among the solutions to this problem offered by Oxfam, appear the measures to prevent tax evasion and the use of economic well-being as a means of pressure on the government in the search for political gain.

Oxfam reports that there are many laws that tend to promote the interests of the rich. Thus, since the late 1970s, tax rates for the wealthiest have declined in 29 of 30 countries. Center’s staff conducted a study in six countries (U.S., UK, Spain, Brazil, India and South Africa). Most people believe that existing laws were to benefit the rich. For example, nearly 80 % of Spaniards and Indians, and more than 60% of U.S. and UK citizens agree that the rich have too much influence.
