European Commission initiates an investigation
European Union suspects MasterCard of violating antimonopoly law in the market of cashless payment for goods and services via bank cards within the EU, the European Commission statement reads.
At present, the European Commission is initiating investigations into violations of competition rules.
According to Antoine Colombani, the spokesman for the European Commission, bank charges upon using a plastic card for payments in all 27 EU countries differ quite significantly. For example, when paying for the amount of € 50 in the Netherlands the amount charged is € 0.10, which is 8 times more than in Poland.
